UC Irvine
A message from
Vice Chancellor of Equal Opportunity and Compliance

Dear Colleagues,

I am reaching out with an update regarding UC Irvine's digital accessibility obligations. As some of you know, the United States the Department of Justice published rulemaking today extending the Title II digital access compliance deadline by one year to April 26, 2027.

However, it is important to note the following:

  • The Section 504 digital access compliance deadline has not changed. Section 504 imposes the same substantive obligations and applies to UC, so UC’s compliance deadline for these requirements remains May 11, 2026.
  • The UC Information Technology Accessibility Policy (ITAP Policy) requires that all UC locations comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA success criteria, by April 24, 2026.

What this means for UC Irvine:

  • Schools and units should continue to prioritize making digital content accessible by this Friday, April 24, 2026, to maintain compliance with the UC Policy.

UC Irvine has made incredible progress towards meeting our regulatory and policy requirements. Let’s keep the momentum going and diligently continue our efforts to create a more inclusive digital environment that is accessible to all. For more information and resources, visit the UCI Accessibility website.  If you have questions, please contact UCI’s ADA Coordinator Andrew Berk.
