Individualized Emergency Evacuation Plan
Purpose
UC Irvine is committed to supporting the safety and preparedness of all campus community members, including individuals with disabilities or access and functional needs. Emergencies can occur without warning, and having a personal evacuation and communication plan is an important step in being prepared. The IEEP program is designed to help individuals think through their needs during an evacuation and identify strategies that support safe and effective response during an emergency. This form is a tool for UC Irvine students and employees, including those with disabilities or with limited English proficiency, to plan for their needs during an emergency evacuation from a UC Irvine building or facility.
Start Here: Create Your Personal Evacuation & Communication Plan
The Evacuation and Communication Plan is a self-guided tool for planning your evacuation. You choose whether to share this plan with UC Irvine All students and employees with disabilities or access needs must complete an Evacuation & Communication Planning Form before requesting an IEEP.
UC Irvine encourages you to consider the following factors when creating your Evacuation and Communication Plan:
- Identify buildings where you regularly spend time
- Consider options for accessible evacuation routes
- Think through how you prefer to receive emergency information
- Identify what assistance you need during an emergency and how you might obtain it
- Understand the actions you can take to prepare for evacuation
Completing the form will help you better understand your needs and options. Many people will find that the form provides the information necessary to create their own evacuation plan without any additional support. This information is specifically for the individual and is not tracked by UC Irvine.
UC Irvine can provide assistance with these factors if you request an IEEP.
When to Request an Individualized Emergency Evacuation Plan (IEEP)
If, after completing the planning form, you determine that you need additional assistance developing or implementing an evacuation plan, you may request an Individualized Emergency Evacuation Plan (IEEP). An IEEP is a collaborative process and involves a site visit with core campus departments, including the ADA Coordinator, Environmental Health & Safety (Fire Safety), Emergency Management, and your building’s Facility Manager (BFMI). An IEEP may be appropriate if you:
- Need help identifying accessible evacuation routes in specific campus buildings
- Require support understanding building features, sheltering options, or evacuation procedures
- Have disability-related needs that may require a reasonable accommodation to support safe evacuation
- Unable to complete the self-assessment
What the IEEP Team Will Do
During the IEEP process, campus partners will:
- Help you evaluate potential accessible evacuation routes from buildings you identify
- Explain how to request disability-related reasonable accommodations that give you equal opportunity to participate in UC Irvine’s emergency planning
- Draft a summary document outlining evacuation routes, disability-related considerations, and any approved reasonable accommodations
Those requesting reasonable accommodations should contact:
- Students: Disability Services Center (DSC) – (949) 824-7494 | dsc@uci.edu
- Employees: Human Resources, Employee Experience Center (EEC) – (949) 824-0500 | eec@uci.edu
Important Notes
- This plan is voluntary and is not required to be shared with UC Irvine.
- UCI cannot mandate any individual to provide personal assistance during an emergency. The planning form allows you to identify people who may be able to assist you, but this is voluntary on their part.
- People with IEEP’s who would like emergency preparedness-related reasonable accommodations must make these requests directly to DSC (for students) or HR (for employees).
- Emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility, and creating a personal evacuation plan is the most important first step.
